Steps to Become a Certified Medical Interpreter

Obtain proof of education: high school or higher. Have a copy of that document, make sure it is translated into English if it was issued in another country.

Have proof of proficiency in both English and non-English languages. Please see the list of acceptable tests and documents: https://sharedsystems.dhsoha.state.or.us/DHSForms/Served/oe8923.pdf

Complete 60 hours of OHA-approved training

Take a written exam with NBCMI or CCHI, pass it successfully, become Hub/Core-Certified.

Take an oral exam (oral exams are available only in 7 languages), pass it successfully to become Nationally Certified.

In the state of Oregon, you may become Qualified before completing the certification process.
